Afton Chavez, MD
Afton Chavez, MD is a PGY3 dermatology resident at Brown University. She graduated with honors from the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College and obtained her BA summa cum laude in Global Health at the Barrett Honors College at Arizona State University. Her interests are in innovation, global health, human rights, and healthcare environmental design. She has pioneered a number of medical philanthropic and public health projects abroad, including a WHO-award winning public health outreach program to reduce aminoglycoside-induced ototoxicity in Nicaragua. In addition, she completed a health informatics fellowship in Botswana, Africa and authored several papers on telemedicine and open source technologies. She served as an intern and consult at the Fogarty Institute for Innovation for Zebra Medical Technologies, who created the world’s first handheld optical imaging device designed to provide histologic diagnoses via multiphoton microscopy and second harmonics generation. She is a current scholar of the Integrative Oncology Scholars Program at University of Michigan where she is researching integrative approaches to treat radiation dermatitis.
