Kumar Sukhdeo, MD, PhD

Kumar Sukhdeo, MD, PhD is a physician-scientist trained as a stem cell biologist and hair specialist dermatologist. He completed his undergraduate degree with honors at Duke University, followed by a formative translational research experience at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute with Dr. Ron DePinho and Dr. Ruben Carrasco investigating cancer genetics using transgenic mouse models. Dr. Sukhdeo continued in Cleveland, Ohio to complete his medical (MD) and graduate (PhD) degrees at Case Western Reserve University and Cleveland Clinic. His PhD thesis with Dr. Jeremy Rich concentrated on stem cell signaling pathways and regenerative applications, which continues as his primary research interest. He completed his dermatology residency at NYU under the mentorship of Dr. Jerry Shapiro to focus on hair and scalp disorders, including the investigation of new restorative hair modalities. Dr. Sukhdeo’s passion as an innovator is to solve the fragmented and frustrating experience felt in the clinic by patients regarding hair loss concerns. The current standard of hair care in dermatology lacks objectivity and standardized measurement protocols. To these ends, Dr. Sukhdeo co-founded a teledermatology practice and biotechnology company, Pilaris (www.pilaris.com), incorporating his development of handheld dynamic quantitative trichoscopy (DQT) and reproducible global photography.
